Homeless at Harvard Finding Faith and Friendship on the Streets of Harvard Square (Audible Audio Edition) John Christopher Frame J D Cullum Zondervan Books

Harvard Square is at the center of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is the business district around Harvard University. It's a place of history, culture, and some of the most momentous events of the nation. But it's also a gathering place for some of the city's homeless.
What is life like for the homeless in Harvard Square? Do they have anything to tell people about life? And God?
That's what Harvard student John Frame discovered and shares in Homeless at Harvard. While taking his final course at Harvard, John Frame stepped outside the walls of academia and onto the streets, pursuing a different kind of education with his homeless friends.
What he found - in the way of community and how people understand themselves - may surprise you.
In this unique book, each of these urban pioneers shares his own story, providing insider perspectives of life as homeless people see it. This heartwarming pause-resister shows how John learned with, from, and about his homeless friends - who together tell an unforgettable story - helping listeners better understand problems outside themselves and that they're more similar to those on the streets than they may have believed.

I got this book because I was interested in the interviews of the homeless people. On that point, it was fairly good, as some of them were very interesting characters. However, the material is presented in a rather disjointed way, which I found hard to keep straight in my mind. Also, toward the end of the book we have the usual lecture/guilt trip on how "society" and/or Christians need to "do more" for the homeless, but it is never made very clear what that might be. (I particularly found it ironic that one of the homeless men were criticizing churches for not doing more for them, while sitting in a church that opens its doors for them daily to hang out in and also feeds them regularly.)Product details

Homeless at Harvard Finding Faith and Friendship on the Streets of Harvard Square (Audible Audio Edition) John Christopher Frame J D Cullum Zondervan Books Reviews
All I can say is Wow! I loved this book! It took me back to a time I was taking a research class for my undergraduate degree and did a group project about the homeless. The only difference is that John Christopher Frame went ALL THE WAY!!! You will not be able to put this book down if you like to feel like you are right in the midst of what is transpiring within the text. I truly felt as if I was standing right there, smelling, feeling, seeing every detail that he experienced as he dwelt among the Homeless at Harvard. I really had no idea, to what extent he was going to go during the summer he decided to dwell with them. But I felt every ounce of discomfort he went through to fit in. I did however from my own experience know he was going to come across all kinds of characters with a wealth of wisdom and experiences behind them. The spiritual outlooks that come from his friends George, Neal, Dane and Chubby John are real life overcoming views on how to overcome struggles, whether you have a roof over your head or not. I hope you take the time to enjoy this book as much as I did. I would LOVE to see this story played out in a movie!

Homeless at Harvard is the story of a student who decides to spend his summer on the streets of Harvard Square learning about homelessness. Through the story of him and a few of his closest homeless friends, we see what life is really like in the homeless world, and it's not what I expected at all! By the end of the book, though John does not think he did much for the homeless, I believe he did more than he knows. He opened up a world and made it real and relatable for those of us who will never experience what it is like to be without a home.
This book changed forever the way I view the homeless. And it also showed me that just because I don't have money to give to the homeless, doesn't mean I don't have anything to offer them. Sometimes the best thing we can give another soul is what he or she is not asking for--a relationship. Instead of pretending we don't see people, especially those who are not like us, we can smile, say hello, offer a listening ear. So many times, I would be in the car when a homeless man or woman walked by. Knowing I had no money to give to them, I would look away when they came near (I'm not proud of it). But, after reading this book, when we passed by a man asking for change, I smiled at him and waved. It wasn't much, but is was a recognition that he mattered.
I recommend this book to everyone. It will open your eyes to a whole new way of relating, not just to the homeless, but to everyone around you.
Don't miss out on what John's book will do in you life!

Authors' 'sincerity' was really never confirmed~did he write this for his $ benefit? I found Frames deliverance of info did not always flow well-he'd jump around w/sorted stories.
Our book club did have a very interesting discussion on homeless~in general, as well as in our own Midwest city.
Frame's account is unvarnished and authentic. For anyone who seeks the common face of humanity in the world, this is an important book. For those who seek to serve this population, it is indispensable.
A great, inspirational and thought provoking book. The challenge the author took is amazing. The book will challenge its readers to have sensitivity toward the homeless.
The practical experience of the writer, well described and informative. Loved the characters/ friends. Good question at the end, who's need is being meet by joining the homeless?
great
